“We are pouring into eternal beings, which leads to flourishing.”
- William Arbaugh, Humanities Teacher
I am a Christian, husband, father, writer, storyteller, ancient literature appreciator, tea fancier, fairy tale enjoyer, gentleman adventurer, born and raised in Alaska.
Have you taught or been involved in schools somewhere else prior to FCS? If so, where, and how long?
I homeschooled my son and daughter for six years.
What are your hobbies or things you enjoy outside of the school?
I enjoy writing, fishing, bookbinding, woodcarving, and hunting down antique books, which then change my life.
What or who inspired you to work in education?
I was blessed to have many passionate teachers who infected me with a love of learning. Above them all was a lit teacher named Mr. Landis. He was like John Keating in “Dead Poets Society.”
What's a favorite book you've read?
The Iliad by Homer, with Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen a close second.
How many books do you have stacked on your bedside table or in your "To Read" pile?
I have four full-size bookshelves holding my “to read” pile.
What do you find most compelling or distinct about Christian classical education?
Buy me a cup of coffee and I will talk your ear off on this. The short version is how the focus is on training the affections toward the Good, the Beautiful, and the True. We are pouring into eternal beings, which leads to flourishing.
What do you love about the idea of teaching at FCS or what do you anticipate appreciating the most?
Another “buy me a cup of coffee question.” I look forward to impacting students and being impacted by them. It is not just about getting test answers right. It’s as much or more about the journey and conversation.
If you have a "life verse" or a verse that is ministering to you right now, what might it be?
Currently, James 3:17 ministers to me. It is possibly the most concise guide to discernment in the Christian life I know of.
If you have a personal life's mission statement, what is it? If not, how might you describe what you feel called to as a believer?
My life’s motto is a Latin phrase I learned many years ago: “Provehito in Altum,” which means something close to “Further into the Deep.” Whether it is my faith, my relationship with education, or my understanding, I intend to aim at going further into the deep.
