Meet Our Teachers: Thomas Mann

I am most indebted to FCS for the fact that it is a true, authentic 'learning community.' A culture of trust exists such that everyone in the building is free to engage the task of learning continually—steady, messy, fruitful growth, much like a well-watered garden.” - Thomas Mann, Middle & Upper School Teacher, Thesis, Humanities, Bible

My wife, Hannah, and I live in Floyd County, Virginia, with our nine-year old son, Aiden. We love the beautiful farms, rich forests, and slow-paced lifestyle Floyd offers, and the scenic drive down the mountain to school every day is always a treat.

My wife spotted a billboard one day in 1997 announcing the launch of a new Christian classical school. Our early interest was deepened one day when, at a coffee shop in Grandin Village, we spotted a group of FCS students studying Latin at one of the tables. The ensuing conversation bonded us to the mission and vision of the school. In 2003, during a transitional time in my life, I was approached by a then-faculty member about coming on as a part-time Bible instructor. This opportunity opened up and quickly became a full-time teaching position.

What do you find most compelling or distinct about Christian classical education?

A catalyst to the imagination, CCE offers a feast of ideas and invites all to partake. Done well, it makes disciplines accessible which may be otherwise difficult and trains habits of mind and body which produce good citizens. With God's blessing, we anticipate rearing generations of thoughtful, faithful participants in Kingdom work.

Why do you love Faith Christian School or what do you appreciate most about Faith Christian School?

In addition to the things stated above, I would say I am most indebted to FCS for the fact that it is a true, authentic "learning community." A culture of trust exists such that everyone in the building is free to engage the task of learning continually—steady, messy, fruitful growth, much like a well-watered garden!

If you have a "life verse" or a verse that is ministering to you right now, what might it be?

Micah 7:9: "...He will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold His righteousness."

If you have a personal life's mission statement, what is it? If not, how might you describe what you feel called to as a believer?

To be a purveyor of truth, goodness, and beauty...
