“The community of the school has blessed my family in tremendous ways, so it is a joy to spend even more time with the people who serve our students day in and day out.”
- Lisa Anderas (JK/K Art Teacher)
I have lived most of my life in the Midwest of America, but I love the South and am thankful to call Roanoke home! I am married to my best friend, Phil, and together we have three kids: Mary Clare (16), Elisha (12), and Betty (10).
What are your hobbies or things you enjoy outside of the school?
I love to watercolor paint, hike, decorate, read novels, play guitar, watch movies, bake, and spend quality time with family and friends.
What post-secondary schools did you attend? Degrees held?
I graduated from Wheaton College with a B.A. in Elementary Education.
I had a short career in public school education while living in Durham, NC. Most of my teaching experience has come from being a stay-at-home mom for the past 16 years. One of my favorite things to do with my kids has always been creating art—painting, crafting, drawing, etc., so teaching art lessons to our youngest students at Faith Christian School is right up my alley!
What or who inspired you to work in education?
My love for little kids is what inspired me to study education in college. My dad was a college professor for most of his career, and I saw the impact that one teacher could have on a student again and again throughout his career. And while teaching tiny kids is very different from teaching college students, the commitment, support, and care from a loving teacher have an impact on every human, no matter the age.
What's your favorite book you've read?
I've always been a big fan of the Anne of Green Gables series—especially Anne of the Island. Anne's world and way of seeing and describing the beauty around her feel very familiar to me. You could say she's a kindred spirit. ;)
How many books do you have stacked on your bedside table or in your "To Read" pile?
I like a tidy nightstand, so I only have a few books stacked there at the moment. Two that I'm excited to read are Gloria! The Archbishop's Wife and Neither Bomb nor Bullet: Ben Kwashi, Archbishop on the Front Line.
What do you find most compelling or distinct about Christian classical education?
Like our esteemed leader (Peter Baur) often says, we are watching our children receive the education that we wish we had. I find this to be very true! I love how the model of the trivium grows with kids as their minds develop. At this moment, our three children are in upper school, middle school, and lower school, so to see this play out in what they are learning and doing in their respective grades is just amazing. I love how learning world history is critical to their education in shaping how they see and think about the world now. And Christ is at the center of everything. What a gift!
What do you love about the idea of teaching at Faith Christian School or what do you anticipate appreciating most about Faith Christian School?
I am very excited to join the faculty of FCS in teaching art to our youngest students. The community of the school has blessed my family in tremendous ways, so it is a joy to spend even more time with the people who serve our students day in and day out. I am especially delighted to spend time with the JK and kindergarten students, exploring what our hands can create!
If you have a "life verse" or a verse that is ministering to you right now, what might it be?
Revelation 21 & Romans 8!!
