B’nai B’rith, Hebrew for Sons of the Covenant, is the oldest existing national Jewish organization in the United States. It was founded on October 14, 1843, in New York City’s East Broadway neighborhood. From its beginning, B’nai B’rith’s interests have been international because its constituency is dispersed throughout the world. Today, B’nai B’rith has an active presence in 51 countries and continues to expand its social services worldwide through a network of adult member lodges and youth groups. Through this international network, its membership has grown beyond 200,000 participants as the spirit of B’nai B’rith continues to serve those in need.
Locally, the Roanoke Chapter of B’nai B’rith, known as the Israel Friedlander Lodge, is best known for its work in interdenominational relations, betterment of religious understanding, and religious tolerance. One of the most outstanding activities in this area is the annual B’nai B’rith Athletic and Achievement Awards. This award, which began in 1951, was conceived as a channel to bring outstanding student athletes from the local area high schools into public focus. Each school nominates an outstanding female and male candidate for the award. This group of nominees is judged based on their athletic, scholastic, and personal life. Two outstanding individuals, one female and one male, are selected to be the overall winners and receive college scholarships.
