Choosing a college can be an intimidating process, and rightfully so, as the options feel limitless and the process daunting. Faith Christian School strives to involve parents and students in a process that empowers them to make this important decision, fully informed and confident.

Choosing a college can be an intimidating process, and rightfully so, as the options feel limitless and the process daunting.

For this reason, at Faith Christian School we introduce the college process to our students prior to their entering the ninth grade. This timing makes sure that students (and parents) are fully informed about the college process from beginning to end. An information session for parents and students includes the importance of the 9th-12th grade years as students’ grades, resume of activities, and any honors and/or awards from this time period become part of the formal application process. In addition, a detailed calendar for the college process is provided to eliminate any surprises. The thorough planning and communication on our end ensure that families have the opportunity to stay ahead in their own planning. This proactive, highly personal, and engaged approach helps alleviate a significant part of the angst that might otherwise come with the college process. Each step along the way is clearly laid out to make sure students are on task and on time with their scheduled visits to colleges, standardized tests, applications, and any other necessary follow-up.  Our small classes are particularly beneficial when our faculty are writing personal recommendations, an important consideration for many colleges.

Consistently scheduled meetings with each 9th-12th grade class occur with increasing frequency as the students near the end of their junior year and head into their senior year. Individual meetings with families are scheduled to identify specific interests related to types of colleges and/or universities and potential majors.  These factors assist students in making informed decisions about where they might apply and ultimately attend. Individual meetings are always available, whether with students, parents, or both.

FCS has found over many years that the distinct offerings of our Christian classical education have been attractive to colleges and universities. Our graduates bring strength in writing, sound reasoning, thoughtful dialogue, and a level of maturity in accessing and working with college and university faculty. Our graduates have read and studied the great works of civilization through writers such as Dante, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Bonhoeffer, and Einstein; they are required to take Latin in the 4th - 8th grades and are taught formal Logic and formal Rhetoric. Our standardized test scores have consistently been some of the highest in the Roanoke Valley. Colleges that are familiar with FCS are aware of her graduates’ strengths.

Ultimately, it is our desire to encourage students to prayerfully consider where God might desire to have them. This is our prayer as well, and we believe God will be faithful to lead them in their search and final decision.
