“The community aspect - we are a family. The support I feel for myself, my family, and my kids is like nothing else I have ever experienced.”
- Kristan Brown, Divisions Head
I taught in public education for 5.5 years, and after having my daughter, I knew I wanted more for her in regard to education. My husband and I discovered classical education by researching and knew that was the type of education we wanted for our daughter (then later, our son). I began homeschooling my daughter, and we realized that wasn't a good fit for our family. A friend mentioned Faith Christian School to me, but I thought that we were not "private school" kind of people. But after visiting once, my husband and I both knew this was the school for us.
I started as an Upper School Math teacher in 2014, transitioned to the Head of Lower School in 2018, and currently serve as the Divisions Head, leading Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools.
What post-secondary schools did you attend? Degrees held?
Concord College - Teaching degree in Music Education and Mathematics Education; Concord University - Master's degree in Educational Leadership
Have you taught or been involved in schools somewhere else prior to FCS? If so, where, and how long?
I taught for 5.5 years (until I had my daughter) at Alleghany High School in Covington, VA. I taught night classes at VA Western Community College for 5 years.
I love to be outside and hike on the beautiful trails around Roanoke. I love baseball - specifically the Cincinnati Reds. I also very much enjoy traveling and food - I love to discover new foods in new cities. I also love musical theater and enjoy visiting NYC to see Broadway shows.
What or who inspired you to work in education?
My high school geometry teacher, Mrs. Sherwood, helped me to love math and realize that not understanding right away was okay, that struggling through to understanding was the way to really learn. She was amazing!
What do you find most compelling or distinct about Christian classical education?
There are so many things! But two things I want for my kids are for their affections to be trained for the good, true, and beautiful and for my children to be able to think for themselves logically.
What do you love about the idea of teaching at Faith Christian School or what do you anticipate appreciating most about Faith Christian School?
The community aspect - we are a family. The support I feel for myself, my family, and my kids is like nothing else I have ever experienced. I also am very grateful for the amazing faculty and staff that pour into my children. I could not ask for a better group of adults to partner with my husband and me to disciple my children. They are modeling for my kids how to love God and follow Him, and that is the most important thing I want for my kids - above and beyond what they learn, what college they go to, what job they get - I want them to love Jesus and live for Him, and the faculty and staff model that for my kids daily.
