Here at Faith Christian, we have the privilege of honoring our students with various awards and ceremonies throughout the year. Among these are yearly departmental awards honoring students who have excelled in various subjects, awards recognizing exceptional athletic performance and sportsmanship, and awards given to students who embody the three hallmarks of FCS: Fides, Ministerium, and Veritas. These awards are presented at end-of-year ceremonies where the students receiving them are publicly recognized for their accomplishments before faculty, parents, and their own peers.
In addition to these individualized awards, we hold ceremonies honoring students as they progress to higher stages of their education, specifically marking the completion of Lower School (for 5th graders) and Middle School (for 8th graders). It is at these ceremonies that students receive a certificate of completion and are charged by a faculty member who reminds them of important truths as they move forward in their career at FCS. Additionally, our seniors are honored for completing their senior thesis – the capstone project of our Christian classical education.
These ceremonies are not merely rites of passage; rather, they are intentionally designed to allow students to reflect on their accomplishments and to be encouraged to continue with diligence and perseverance in their academic careers and, more importantly, in pursuing Christ in all things. Our desire at FCS is for students to feel accomplished in doing hard things, learning, and growing, without seeking their identity in awards and accomplishments (or lack of awards). We want students to understand that their identity is in Christ. They are image bearers, and no award will ever change that!
All in all, it is through intentionality and purpose that we offer these awards and ceremonies, not as an incentive for students to be recognized publicly, but to honor the God-given talents that students possess and the diligence with which students commit themselves to produce good, true, and beautiful work.
Although not every student receives a physical award, the recognition we prioritize at FCS aims to allow all students to recognize their own growth, take thoughtful account of their accomplishments, and be inspired to ultimately continue seeking the Lord to whom all gifts, honor, and accolades point.
